Meet Chachi Jr (CJ) and Sagi Hama

Since the kids were born, we have subscribed to PJ Library, an organization that mails free Jewish books to Jewish kids throughout their childhood that celebrate Jewish traditions and values. Our favorite book over the years has always been, "Ella's trip to Israel." A story about a young girl on her first trip to Israel who brings her stuffed monkey, Koofi who gets dirty at each stop along the way and in the end is a reminder of her entire trip. Sophie decided she wanted to do this for her and Zoey so off we went to find some stuffed animals to make dirty. In come Chachi Jr the donkey (the actual name of the donkey that my mom had growing up in Israel instead of a car) and Sagi Hama (what Zoey used to call Sally the camel when she was a baby.)

Sophie plans to take these guys all over Israel, get them dirty and remember the trip. After a fierce haggle over camels last night, she is now thrilled to be carrying them in her backpack around the country to see the sights.

They have already visited the Western Wall, the Jewish quarter, Kind David's tomb, the tunnels below the Western Wall, had some wine, got a Shabbat kiss, and ate a chocolate breakfast.

The middle of the world

Image
The kids were excited to wake up and run downstairs for a buffet breakfast. I think they got spoiled in Israel because they now expect this on every vacation. Theo was excited to try some new foods, including papaya, which he has stated he will never eat again. Zoey discovered that watermelon actually has black seeds in it  We met up with our tour guide, Sebastian (Zoey called him Flounder), and then we were off to the middle of the world. It took us until now to figure out that Ecuador was named Ecuador because it's on the equator. We learned the history of the equator line and how in the 1700s the French made a large monument with the wrong latitude. The French were actually a few degrees off. We first went to visit the real equator line, the one that was verified in 2000 with actual GPS and computers.  To start, we got a tour of Ecuador, it's people, it's culture, the Amazonian people, and the different practices of all. This included a very detailed explanation and phot...

Best day of my life

"Best day of my life" exclaimed by Theo. We saw tortoises.  Big tortoises.  Small tortoises.  Old tortoises.  Baby tortoises.  Tortoises walking.  Tortoises sleeping.  Tortoises bathing.  Tortoises eating.  Tortoises mating. Tortoises here.  Tortoises there. We saw tortoises everywhere. Goodnight

A new continent

Image
We got up early in the morning and boarded the plane to Panama. Unfortunately it was us, and a school trip of 50 teenagers as well. After waiting for all 50 kids to check in, which took almost an hour, we finally got our turn. A quick stopover in Panama and then off the Ecuador we went. Well... Us... And the 50 teenagers.  We arrived in Quito and the kids were excited to check another continent off their list. They've now checked off North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. (If you need a refresher on the continents, Zoey would be happy to sing you the song.) Theo immediately asked if we could go to Africa next summer. We found our tour guide and driver and headed down to baggage claim where we were met by a giant photo of a tortoise. Theo was over the moon. After a car ride around the Andes Mountains, we slowly got used to the high elevation of 9,400 feet above sea level. Ironic since in August we were at the lowest place on Earth at the dead sea. A few random facts from th...
